Houston Landscaping with Flowering Shrubs

Your Houston landscaping plan can include any number of flowering shrubs that appeal to you.  Our warm climate so many different species that you can choose shrubs of any size, shape, and color you wish.  The following are just a few examples of what you can have us add to key areas of your yard to add depth, dimension, and curb appeal to your property.

One of the more popular flowering shrubs that we use in Houston landscaping is the Groundcover Rose Bush.  These are hardy plants that grow up to 8 feet across.  Unlike your typical rose bush, these plants grow very low to the ground and are highly disease resistant.  They also display an uncanny ability to grow along sloped areas.  This makes them very well suited to places that might be a bit more difficult for other plants to grow.

If you have English gardens in either your front yard or back yard, consider adding groundcover roses to the areas along either side of your driveway.  English landscaping features very colorful themes, and low-growth roses are a great way to introduce this theme to visitors newly arriving at your home.

Another very colorful flowering shrub that you can use in any English, formal, traditional, or luxury Houston landscaping plan is the Azalea bush.  This is a very popular plant in Houston, with several Azalea gardens being visited by thousands of people every year in the spring.  It is also an ideal landscaping plant because it grows to a maximum height of 4 feet and spreads out to about 3 feet.

There is a great deal that our Houston landscaping designers can do with Azaleas.  If you have a large deck in the back of your house, these bushes will grow almost level to the deck and help transition its architecture into the softscape beyond.  Their dark pink, almost purple blooms make them ideal flowering shrubs to grow around luxury swimming pools.  Many people with outdoor kitchens and very large gazebos also like having Azalea bushes to act as decorative borders around these structures.

If you want a flowering shrub that you can have as a lawn alternative in your back yard, you might want to have us plant Pink Surprise Bush.  This is a fast growing plant that grows about chest high to a man.  It is a very low maintenance plant that doesn’t mind being pruned.  It has attractive, light green leaves that work with any Houston landscaping plan that emphasizes color, good cheer, and a feeling of freedom.  Its blooms are pink and irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds.

If you have a part of your yard that your are tired of mowing, and that you find rather too empty to be interesting in any capacity, Pink Surprise Bush can be planted around a small patio and custom fountain to create a very easily maintained, primitive hummingbird and butterfly garden.

Another flowering shrub that butterflies and hummingbirds love is that Glossy Abelia.  Its leaves are shiny and its blooms are simple, beautiful, fragrant flowers.   It is an excellent species to use in Houston landscaping designs around homes with very small front yards.  It is just the right shape and size to focus the eye on the façade of the home and away from the size limitations of the lot it resides on.
