Houston Garden Décor

Houston garden décor is a type of professional landscaping that specializes in the enhancement of a garden by the careful introduction of mostly inorganic materials to its design.

Decorations are placed in many different locations within a garden.  Borders are very important, because they give depth and definition to the scene.  Sometimes something as simple as a small garden wall can be all that is needed to make a planting stand out.

The use of décor to create focal points is also a very important part of professional garden design.  The majority of gardens have a focal point in the center, although the larger ones may be subdivided into as many as four equally proportioned areas of interest.  Within these zones of interest you would also have special areas of focus that would need to be distinguished in order to catch the attention of guests.

The amount of garden décor that a particular garden needs is highly subjective.  It varies according to several factors ranging from the type of garden itself to the size of the garden.  In small, traditional gardens such as the English knot garden, you may only need a few flowers and decorations, or perhaps a few decorative urns to define the borders.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, modern and contemporary gardens take a completely different approach to aesthetics.  Here, mind is emphasized over organic matter.   Vegetation is minimal and hardscapes constitutes the bulk of the design.  Decorations in these areas must not only be inorganic, it must be highly unique and attractive.

Keep in mind too that in professional landscape design the intention is to make everything in the yard compliment the architecture of the house.  Consequently, there must be a correspondence of some sort established between garden décor and any unique architectural details possessed by the home.  There does not have to be a direct one-to-one correspondence or an excessive number of decorations to do this—just a basic reflection of geometry, form, and special feature.

Decorative elements are as many and varied as garden designs.  Hardscape elements constitute some of the most common elements used to add character and aesthetic to vegetation.  Small patios, courtyards, walkways, and seating areas all help direct traffic to and from gardens and provide viewers with ideal vantage points from which to enjoy its beauty.

Vertical impact appears with the addition of masonry elements.  Common examples include elevated planters, garden walls, and benches.

Water is another important element in Houston garden décor.  Water is the stuff of life and has an obvious relationship to plant life.  Water elements that are very popular include koi ponds, natural garden ponds, waterfalls, streams, and custom fountains.

Statuary of many different genres is frequently used to adorn gardens.  It adds unique form and vertical impact to any scene.  In formal garden design, we see a great deal of classical sculptures.  In more modernesque gardens, contemporary sculptures, metal sculptures are popular, and even mirrors suspended between bright, stainless steel posts can all expand the garden’s sense of dimension.

Finally, landscape architecture itself can be a form of Houston garden décor.  Gazebos, pergolas, and arbors present the viewer not only with an idyllic scene, but also with an ideal place to sit and actually experience the garden from within.
