Garden ornaments dress up your outdoor living space. After you have
redesigned your garden or patio area with new furniture and plants, you will
want to add some garden ornaments to the newly refurbished space.
Injecting your personality into your garden makes the space your own. Small
touches like a birdbath, birdhouse, sundial or other garden ornaments dress
up your space with character and interest. Since the beginning of the
garden, we have used these elements to inject life into what we grow.
English gardens have always incorporated garden ornaments into their
design. However, American gardens have unique history all their own. Because
America was such a wild country in comparison to its European counterparts,
we embraced the wildness of the country as an attribute and established
Natural Parks in an effort to impress other countries. Other gardens around
the world that were already trying to portray a natural setting, were now
looking at America’s Natural Parks for guidance and design elements.
Interestingly, during the same time American gardens were being heavily
influenced by the Old World culture of the immigrants. Wealthy Americans
would hire immigrants from England and other countries to design gardens
that resembled those of over seas. They would import garden ornaments from
these far away destinations to mimic the look of traditional English
gardens. Local gardeners slowly began to learn from the immigrants and
develop their own styles, as well. American gardens began to incorporate
plants and designs that were native to the area, combined with plants and
designs from other nations. Some of these mingled designs incorporated
garden ornaments from all over the world, but now items created in America
began to crop up as well. The garden ornaments designed from the area
embraced the natural aspects of the land offering woodland creatures,
pinecones and other native elements that honored the wilderness and natural
aspects of America. Interestingly, Old World items became in twined with the
new. Birdbaths and chipmunks coexisted together in this new garden theme.
Not much has changed since the early days of the American garden. The
natural aspects that are America are still mingled among the Old World
sophistication and charm of gardens past. Today, contemporary gardens are
incorporating small bits and pieces of these elements to create a new look.
The natural style is very popular among today’s designers. Incorporating
garden ornaments that evoke a feeling of nature is a popular trend. Another
element of design, which is now popular, is blurring the lines between
indoor and outdoor living spaces. Outdoor areas are now considered extra
square footage for a home. They are designed with furniture, functionality
and accessories that evoke a filling of another room within the home.
Garden ornaments are now being used both inside and outside of the home
to assist in this melting of lines between the two spaces. Outdoor dining
spaces and even kitchens are very chic, and designing with elements of
nature in the living room, dining room, or bedroom is the now thing to do.
So if you have a special fondness for a garden ornament you have purchased,
don’t be afraid to place it in your home as an accessory.
Whether your look is traditional English garden, natural American, or
contemporary adding splashes of personality is easy with garden ornaments.
The items that nourish your soul and will also nourish your garden or home.
