Deck Design Landscaping

The intention of deck design landscaping is to extend the things you most enjoy indoors into the outdoor realm beyond the walls of your house.  As an add-on room of sorts, the square footage of your deck cannot be taxed as home property.  However, the improvement to your home curb appeal builds lasting resale value and protects your investment in problematic times.

Many people may wonder why Exterior Worlds builds decks when we are so adept at custom patio design.  It is partly a matter of taste, and sometimes a matter of practicality.  Some homes, and some Houston landscaping projects, simply look better with a deck.  Also, if the grade of the land slopes sharply away from a section of the home, a deck built on a small retaining wall is often a much better erosion control device, as well as a much more accessible, stable structure, than a patio would be.

Keep in mind too that most decks add on to the house, so nothing deck design landscaping does not preclude you from having patios constructed in other parts of your yard.  Decks do not have to be built from wood, either.  Decorative concrete can be used to create the appearance of wood, and the cost of the materials is roughly equivalent.  Stone can also be used, but this is very expensive, and will only work with certain architectural styles.

The best way to approach deck design landscaping design from the perspective of the client is to decide on what you want your deck to look like.  Trust your design team from Exterior Worlds to recommend the most suitable and cost effective material to build it with.

Think big when you sit down to do your part of the planning for your deck design landscaping.  You are envisioning an outdoor living space, not just a place to sit and tan.  The location of the structure, in fact, is often based on extending a special room in your home into the yard.  Decks that are connected to living rooms become outdoor rooms.  Decks adjoined to kitchens become combination outdoor kitchen dining areas.  Decks that extend outward from bedrooms give couples a private place to sit in the morning or the evening just steps away from a good night’s sleep.

You can even have a deck that extends outward from the bathroom.  If you like to tan in the hot sun, this is a very convenient way to lay out, then grab a towel and shower off just steps away from your outdoor lounge chair.

Deck design landscaping is also meant to create as comfortable a living experience as possible.  In the few cold months of the winter we have, and in the grueling heat of Gulf Coast summers, the deck may be the only place you can spend any considerable amount of time outside.  This is made possible by building retractable awnings that shield the deck from the sun, and by adding screens that will block out the insects.

Climate control can also be achieved by fans and misters that give you outdoor air conditioning in the summer.  A good solid deck with electrical outlets also gives you plenty of space for a portable space heater or outdoor fireplace that will keep you warm and dry even on a deep February night.

Deck design landscaping by Exterior Worlds also seeks to create an integrated living environment that combines custom deck structures with all the amenities you need to live you particular form of lifestyle to its fullest.  Everything from spas, hot tubs, grilling areas, outdoor kitchens, tanning areas, and children’s play areas can be built into your deck.

The actual size and geometry of your deck will be uniquely customized to accent the aesthetic of your home.  To a major extent as well, the number of guests you plan to invite to gatherings on your deck factor into developing the specific zones of interest where activities will occur.
