Wrought Iron Fencing

Wrought iron fences are used by homeowners who want to express the belief that their design sensibility is not limited just to the house. By using the expressive vocabulary found in wrought iron, they acknowledge that their living environment extends beyond the inner walls of the home, out through the windows and into the landscape design.

For more than 20 years, Exterior Worlds has worked with such clients to build wrought iron fences that are entirely functional and aesthetically pleasing. We find landscape solutions and tailor them especially to meet your needs and desires. Our services are defined by sophisticated style and sumptuous materials, especially so with fences. We strive for superior quality in a superior landscape design.

We sometimes find people who love iron fences but think they can’t use them because of the lack of privacy they afford. One solution we suggest—to obtain privacy and still use wrought iron fencing—is to combine an iron fence with a green border of plants.

Shrubbery is the obvious candidate for plantings along the iron fence line and one we often use. We select shrubs that will attain the desired height and width while thriving in the amount of sunlight the planted area will receive. For those clients who have a formal garden design or who just prefer a more formal look, we might suggest hedges. With a regularly scheduled pruning program, a hedge can be turned into a virtual privacy fence. Hedges also let you control the height you want them to grow to. They do come with a trade-off, though—additional maintenance. The alternative is to let us create a design for low maintenance for you and plant shrubs in a loose border style; that is, letting the bushes grow in their natural state with minimum care.

Most of the landscaping products that we now call wrought iron, such as a wrought iron gate and wrought iron trellis, are actually made of a material called mild steel. The term “wrought iron” is still used, however, because these items have the appearance of wrought iron or were formerly made of wrought iron. Today, true wrought iron is produced on a small scale and, because of the production expense, is reserved mainly for the authentic and historic projects.

Mild steel, a type of carbon steel that is relatively inexpensive to produce and has excellent malleability, offers full freedom of design. You can find the rarified figurations of the Renaissance, the sinuous designs of Art Nouveau and the always compelling geometric patterns. We encourage a discerning eye when choosing the design for your wrought iron fence. Cherubs from the Baroque period would jar the senses in a Japanese garden, for example.

The beauty of a wrought iron fence is that it takes a utilitarian structure and turns it into an expression of distinctiveness. The definition of a fence—an enclosure that creates an adequate barrier around a yard or other such expanse of land for the purposes of security—is expanded and the fence becomes an outdoor art form.
